1999 was the inaugural year for the Fellowship program. George Morrison (Ojibwe) was unanimously chosen by the developers of the Fellowship to be the first Master Artist. At the time, the program was known as the Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Fine Art. We used the term “Fine Art” to distinguish it from an Indian art market.
See The CatalogI’m hoping that what I’m really after is the appreciation of our environment. The place that all of us live as human beings. The environment is crucial to our existence. We can no longer treat it in the matter that we have, but there has to be a degree of respect. And that’s really our survival.”
Truman Lowe (Ho-Chunk) 1999 Fellowship Artist
Help us secure a future in which Native American voices are heard through contemporary artwork. You can help by giving to the Eiteljorg, or by helping us in our search for artists for the next fellowship.
